Ernie Crawford coming back from the First World War was of a new generation. He was original in that, whilst still playing he involved himself in the politics of rugby administration particularly in his missionary geol on behalf of Lundary Rugby.
He was a very safe full back on the Irish team gaining 30 caps between 1920 and 1927. He captained Lansdowne twice in the seasons 1921/22 and 1922/23 and on his retirement was heavily involved in administration as President of Lansdowne in 1939/40 and 1940/41, President of the IRFU in the 1957/58 and on the Irish Selector between 1943 and 1951 and again between 1955-1957.
