Schooled in Pres Bray Co. Wicklow where he was introduced to rugby. He was involved in many other sports such as Gaelic, hurling and soccer. He joined Greystones RFC after school where he won 36 of his 47 Irish caps before joining Lansdowne where he won his remaining caps and gave great service to the club.

He played 138 times for Leinster. During the course of his international career he toured with Ireland to New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Samoa, Argentina and South Africa and also played in the World Cup of 1999 and 2003. He retired in 2007 when he did a term as front row coach to Ulster and is currently front row coach with Leinster.
