He first captained Lansdowne in the 1884/85 season and subsequently 5 times between 1895 and 1900, a club record. He won a Leinster Senior Cup medal in his final season with Lansdowne in 1891.
He was honoured with the presidency of Lansdowne in the season 1909-1910. He had a glittering International career and captained Ireland on 9 occasions including the first victory over England at Lansdowne Road on the 5/2/1887.
He also captained the team that met the very first touring team from overseas, the New Zealand Maori’s in 1888. He served on the rugby union for some 50 years, was President in 1895/96 and Secretary of the International Board from 1898-1934.
