Victor Le Fanu

Victor Le Fanu was captain of the first Lansdowne team to win the Leinster Senior Cup in 1891. He played 11 times for Ireland and was captain on 3 occasions. It is claimed that he would have won more caps, but had a difference of opinion with the selectors and suffered the consequences. A forward, Le Fanu also gained three blues at Cambridge University and has the distinction of being the first Irish international to play in the Varsity match. A contemporary account describes him as “a tall, ginger-headed man, he was quick thinking, sure-handed and a devastating tackler. Later he played a looser forward game and fell out of favour with the selectors”. He was made president of the club in the 1932-33 season and died in 1939
