Willie Cunningham, a product of Belvedere College, won eight Irish caps at scrum half, 1920-23. Elected captain of Lansdowne for the 1923/24 season, he emigrated to South Africa and set up practice as a dentist. Getting an unexpected call-up by an injury-stricken 1924 Lions for the third test at Port Elizabeth, Willie scored the try in the 3-3 draw that day, the only occasion the Lions avoided a test defeat on the tour.
