Des, a De La Salle Churchtown and TCD educated prop forward won 34 caps in the Irish front row, 1984-92, and was an Irish Universities heavyweight boxing champion. Unquestionably the strongest scrummager of his era in Irish rugby, Des represented the Lions against The Rest of the World in 1986 in a special match to celebrate the centenary of the International Board.
