Shane Horgan was born in Drogheda and educated at St. Marys, Drogheda. In November 96 he made his Ireland Youths debut against Spain. In all he played five times at that level. Meath minor footballer and twice All-Ireland under age cross country champion Shane joined Lansdowne in 1997 and in February 98 he made his Ireland Under-21 debut against Scotland and also played at that level against England, Wales and France. Shane made the big breakthrough at international level as a 21 year old, where he adapted with alacrity to selection on the wing. He won his first full cap against Scotland in February 2000 and he marked the occasion by scoring his first international try. A three-quarter in the traditional 'crash-ball' mould, Shane has proved his worth to Ireland on a number of occasions, not least back in 2001 when he played a huge part in pushing the All Blacks (featuring Jonah Lomu) close in Dublin, the home side eventually going down 29-40. At around 16 stones and six feet four inches, Horgan is a powerful presence either on the wing or at centre, opposition teams needing to close him down fast so he does not generate any forward momentum. Whilst often labelled with the 'battering ram' label, he is nevertheless a skilfull footballer with no little speed. His partnership with Brian O'Driscoll has been one of the highlights of an exciting Leinster side. Despite injury Shane won selection as part of the Irish 2003 World Cup Squad and has a tremendous scoring rate for his country having scored 12 tries. Despite an injury disrupted season, Shane was selected, alongside fellow Lansdowne man Gordon D'Arcy, in the 2005 British & Irish Lions squad to tour New Zealand.
