The First XV advanced to the 2nd round of the AIB Cup with a victory over Division 3 team Ards in the RDS on Saturday.
Shane Gahan kicked 2 first half penalties and converted a try from Greg Stafford leaving the scoreline 18 6 at halftime, Colum Murphy scoring the other Lansdowne try.
Ards started the 2nd half very strongly and converted 2 penalties to leave the score 18 12 mid way through the 2nd half.
Lansdowne raised their game and produced two fine tries from David Hewitt & Shane Gahan.
Final score Lansdowne 28 Ards 19.
Following their win over Portadown we now face our friends from Nenagh Ormonde in the 2nd round, which is scheduled for October 17th in the RDS.
The real business begins this weekend with the Senior Squad playing Old Wesley in their first game of the AIL - please support.
U21’s versus Terenure College RFC
The U21’s faced their first full match of the season against Terenure in Lakelands. Even though it was only a friendly it had the making of an exciting game. Lansdowne started the game well with some strong running in the backs and fantastic interplay among the forwards. However unforced errors and good Terenure defence enabled the opposition to soak up the early pressure and begin a spell of domination. Lansdowne held firm after several plays in the Lansdowne 22 and some determined counter rucking by the forwards turned over ball, which unleashed the backs to counter attack the length of the field. Some excellent covering tackling saved an almost certain try. From this play sustained Lansdowne pressure resulted in several penalties on the try line, leading to several attempts from the forwards to barge their way over with no success until scrum half Kevin Quinlan received scrappy ball and found the gap to convert a try the sustained spell deserved. Ronan Skeehan converted the extras. The second try came soon after with a Terenure clearance kick finding touch in the Lansdowne 22 which hooker Dave Tunney took quickly, full back Lorcan Smyth then proceeded forward linking with centre Ferdia Doherty who eventually found winger Kelvin Ekanem who received the ball on the half way line and used pace and power to find the line. Terenure responded with a quick penalty making the score line 12-3 at halftime.
The second half started the same as the first with both teams fighting for field possession. Both teams found themselves under pressure largely from early season unforced errors yet both teams were defensively strong enough to hold out during the third quarter. Strong runs from Charlie Butterworth and Mick Sheehy helped pile the pressure on Terenure. Lansdowne unfortunately could not reflect this on the scoreboard and Terenure began to get back into the game. Through many forward runs Terenure found there way to the Lansdowne line and eventually went over for a try. There were no more scores so the game finished 12-8. The U21’s will try and improve from where the left off next week as they take on the current All-Ireland champions UL Bohs in Limerick on Saturday.
J1 lost their league match against Old Belvedere by 24 – 10
J2 were also beaten by Old Belvedere by 42 points to 7 in their opening League match
J4 (Killer B’s) had an impressive win over Navan by 27 points to 12

The Senior XV bowed out of the Leinster Senior League Cup following a disappointing 19 points to 8 loss to St Mary’s in Templeville.
St Mary’s opened the scoring with a penalty followed by a try from Conor McPhillips in the corner. Lansdowne battled back into the game and David Hewitt landed a penalty to leave the scores 11 - 3 at half time.
Lansdowne held St Marys in their 22 for much of the opening period of the second and were awarded a try when Devin Toner barged over, Hewitt missed the conversion.
St Marys hit back with a fine try in the top corner leaving the final score line 19 - 8.
Next Saturday 26th we play ARDs at home in the RDS in the AIB Cup. The following Saturday 3rd Oct we play Old Wesley away in our first AIB League of the season.
The Under 21s travelled to Newbridge where they achieved an excellent result by retaining the Tomsie Byrne Cup.
The seconds lost 33-24 in a game of two halves. After a fast paced start by Mary’s, Lansdowne found themselves 22-0 down after just 22 minutes. Lansdowne had no one to blame but themselves having given away 7 penalties in the first 22 minutes and never really holding on to the ball. However, just before half time after some good pressure by the forwards Phil Caldwell scored a try converted by Andrew Geraghty leaving it 22-7 at half time. After his try ‘Flipper’ rejoiced and boldly asked, “How d’ya like them apples”... The St Mary’s pack was quick to turn Flipper’s attention to the direction of the scoreboard!
At half time we had given away 11 penalties and the team were to concentrate holding the ball and not giving away penalties.
Lansdowne started the second half like Mary’s had started with strong pressure coming from the front and fast hands spreading the defense out wide. Impressive open side Dan Hills scored a good forwards try just after half time. This was followed soon after by an excellent try from Paddy Flood converted by Andrew Geraghty leaving the score 22-17. The team was playing good running rugby and soon the score was 25-24 after a good try by Shane Gahan with some good passing from the his fellow Green-Machiner the impressive Stu McCarron.
This was not to be Lansdowne’s day however as the game went into the last quarter the penalties started to appear again and Mary’s scored a try followed quickly by a penalty to leave the score 33-24. While the win was St Mary’s, Lansdowne will take the consultation of a 4 try bonus point.
The J2s (3rds) lost their friendly with Old Wesley by 7.19

Lansdowne started brightly with Mathew Healy disallowed a certain try in the opening minutes. After a long period of pressure Aidan McCullen scored a try under the Wesley posts, which Charl Oosthuizen converted.
Wesley battled back into the game levelling the scores at seven points all.
Lansdowne continued to attack the Wesley line and in the 70th minute Charl slotted the winning penalty to leave the final score line 10 points to 7.

Players night held on Saturday
The annual players night for presentation of club awards took place on Saturday 9th May in the Triple Bar of the RDS. There was a very good attendance estimated at 200 for what turned out to be a great night which thankfully was rain free.
There was an excellent Bar-B-Q courtesy of Steve Keating who attended the evening in spite of his severe leg injury sustained in the Moran Cup Final. Music was provided by John O’Regan and to cap it all we had cheap pints at 3 Euro. Thanks very much to Eleanor for organising.
The evening commenced with photographs of the successful teams who brought back 5 trophies to Lansdowne this season viz: 1stXV Leinster Senior Cup, 2ndXV The Metropolitan Cup, J3 XV (3A) The Moran Cup and Under 20’s who captured the McCorry Cup and the Super Six League. We are justly proud of all our teams in Lansdowne this year, none of whom were defeated in the first Round of their respective Leinster competitions and had respectable placings in all Leagues.
President John Kearney presented awards to recipients with well chosen words and announced Michael (Butch) Cassidy as Clubman of the year, Colum Murphy as Senior player of the year and pensioner Dec Drummond as Junior player of the year (surely an oxymoron).
Full award winners were as follows
Clubman of the Year: Michael Cassidy

Junior Player of the Year: Declan Drummond
Honours Caps: Willie Earl & Dave Hewitt
Honours Scarves
2nd XV: William Wallace & Philip Caldwell

A disappointing yet successful season
At the start of this season we set our sights on returning to Division 1 of the AIB League. Defeat to Trinity in our last match of the season consigned us to a second year in Division 2. Failing to get promotion by the narrowest of margins was a huge disappointment that was apparent amongst all the players, coaches and supporters who were at that last game in College Park.
However, in every other respect the Club has had a great season both on and off the field.
The under 20s win over UCD in the McCorry Cup final last Sunday brought to five the number of Trophies won by Lansdowne this season.
The 1st XV won the Leinster Senior League Cup, the Under 20s completed the League and Cup double, the J1s (2nds) won the Newstalk Metropolitan League Cup and the J3s (3rdAs) won the Moran Cup for a fourth successive year.
Congratulations to all our players this season.
