The Inaugural Lansdowne Youth Invitation Cup, an All Ireland 8 team U/16's tournament, was staged last weekend, April 20/21, with the preliminary rounds played on Saturday at Ballycorus and the finals on Sunday morning at the clubhouse pitch. The competition was designed to accommodate Third Year boys, offering them a platform for club competition during Transition Year. This meant the teams were made up of combined under 15's and under 16's. We welcomed Lurgan and Armagh from Ulster, Galwegians and Ballinasloe from Connacht, U.L. Bohemians and Waterpark from Munster while Seapoint and ourselves made up the Leinster contingent.
The weekend weather enabled a great day's rugby up at Ballycorus on Saturday with a genuine carnival like atmosphere prevailing. The games were all hard fought encounters with Lansdowne, Seapoint, Armagh and Galwegians impressing most on field. The finals were held on Sunday morning at the clubhouse pitch at Lansdowne Road, the weather doing us a favour once again.
Lansdowne ran out eventual winners but the spirit of the competition was evident in all games with Armagh and Galwegians perhaps providing the game of the weekend in the play-off for third and fourth place. Congratulations and thanks to all participating teams for contributing to what was a very good weekend's rugby for all concerned.
