The following is the end of season AGM report on the JI (2nd XV)
The Club Second XV under the magnificent Braveheart William Wallace had a magnificent season in wining the League and Cup double at J1 level for the fourth time in the history of the club. (This was also our fourth consecutive Metro final). It is always difficult to captain a second XV due to the demands higher up and the management and captain are to be commended for blending a fabulously enthusiastic bunch of players many with senior team experience which added a steely edge to their performances. Many of these same players had effectively given up on the social aspects of their weekends as they had subbed the previous day for the senior XV.
Special memories of the Metro cup campaign include solid victories over Coolmine and Clontarf, the quarter final where we beat a fancied Seapoint after extra time on a Saturday morning before the Scottish International, the semi final of the Metro against Terenure out in Coolmine and the final against Garda where all our experience was brought to the fore and we won 20-0.
The league had started rather indifferently with 2 losses from our first 3 matches. Thereafter we were undefeated and, to me, the defining moment was a 15-15 draw with St Mary’s a week before Christmas when we were missing some regular players. The league title was clinched in early March with victory over Blackrock.
Congratulations to the players and management on their achievement. Special thanks to coach Daniel O’Brien who retires this year on a high, and takes up a position as coach of Castleknock JCT where we wish him well and hope he can fit it in with playing for our A’s and B’s. Willie Aherne managed the side along with Jimbo Maguire and their dedication and commitment throughout the season is greatly appreciated.
