Mini and Youth Round Up 09/10

May 01, 2010

Despite been washed out in November and frozen solid in January, it was a great season for the Minis. We fielded teams from U6 to U15 through a total of 250 registered players with some mini sides fielding 2 or 3 teams.

The season started in September in the CUS grounds in Bird Ave. with a visit of the Heineken cup through ex Mini. Luke Fitzgerald and Devin Toner.

The registration of players was carried out by an army of volunteers under the expert eye of Ingrid Tidey who did a magnificent job to comply with all the Leinster Branch paperwork.

The age rating changed this year to the calendar year effectively causing last years groupings to be split in two. Whilst this caused headaches administratively, an army of 50 coaches helped out in assisting the transition. We certified 10 coaches at Mini level and a further 4 at Foundation level. One of the benefits of the new age rules was that players made more new friends in their groups.

Ray Carroll acted as Leinster Branch rep and fixtures secretary and did a great job of juggling pitches and times with ease aplomb. Ulla Callaghan acted as Child welfare officer and ensured that the Irish Red Cross had a first aider, the bright and colourful Shirley, on site each week. Pat Moran was in charge of kit sales.

The Lansdowne Executive is very grateful to Conor Shaw who is chairman of mini rugby and his team for the enormous amount of work put in this season in nurturing the talent for future years and for organising mini rugby games to be played at each of our home matches of the AIL.. Thanks are also due to Kevin Jennings and Stephen Tonge, the Marist fathers and our friends in CUS for their hospitality and generosity in allowing us use Bird Ave.

The annual Minis lunch was held in the Four Seasons on 9 April. Over 200 attended and thanks are due to Derry Shaw and Eleanor Connolly for organising. The end of season party was a monster BBQ in Ballycorus were awards and medals were presented. The Minis eagerly await return to Lansdowne Road next season.
