Lansdowne U13 team overcame Blackrock by 18-5 last Sunday in Ballycorus in the semi final of the Metro League. Captained on the day by Oscar O'Brien and with tries from Calum O'Reilly and JJ Hession and some exemplary kicking from Ben Lockhart, Lansdowne proved too strong in the end for a spirited Blackrock side.
The weather was perfect for rugby, cold but dry. Lansdowne's first try came from deep within our own 22 and it was a remarkable feat of side stepping that saw Calum O'Reilly receive the ball just over the half way, weave his way up the pitch and finish with the try close to the posts; close enough to make it relatively straight forward for Ben Lockhart to convert. Lansdowne led 7-0.
Shortly thereafter the referee penailsed Blackrock for going off their feet and Lockahrt took the three points with relative ease.
Ealry in the second half Blackrock got a foothold back in the game when they ran a try in the right hand corner, just too far wide for the conversion. Lansdowne were pegged bck to 10-5. Game on!
Blackrock were again penalised for not releasing and another 3 points was bagged from Lockhart's trusty left boot. With a 13-5 lead the Lansdowne team went looking to kill the game off and were duly rewarded for their pressure when JJ Hession emerged from a maul and broke several tackles before touching down to make it 18-5. The conversion was a very close miss and the game finished 18-5.
Lansdowne progress to the final of the Metro League where they will face Coolmine on May 10th at a venue yet to be decided.
