Lansdowne U13’s on the road to Donnybrook…...

Apr 05, 2016

After a series a friendlies throughout October and November last year, the U13 team started their league games proper a month ago with an encounter at Ballycorus against Bective, the very same team that had beaten them on the first (friendly!) match of the season.

The game on January 24th was a gripping affair, saw three tries (Cian Ryan twice and Fred Hamilton) on both sides and the decider finally came thanks to the quick decisionmaking and the boot of Hugh Moran that gave Lansdowne the win. 18:15.

A week later the team travelled to Westmanstown. Lansdowne dominated the game most of the time but scoring was difficult to come by.

In the first half it was a great run from Daniel O'Byrne along the right wing to put down the ball for a try and the lead. Relief came shortly before the final whistle when Fred Hamilton scored the second try and secured 10:0 win.

For Valentine’s Day we were on the road again, up north to Kells to play North Meath RFC.

It proved the biggest challenge so far. North Meath showed why they had two high score wins on record and were attacking our defence. And that defence around Jamie Doyle, our Captain, proved hard to break.

No matter what and who was thrown at them, Lansdowne pushed back, sometimes with only a few inches to spare from the try line. The pack pushed back attack after attack.

A couple of times Lansdowne U13’s managed to get onto the other half of the pitch, but not seriously threatening the North Meath defence.

This was a game for the Lansdowne defense to show and shine.

Only in the last ten minutes the forward play proved more effective and brought us the biggest chance of the game with a penalty. Hugh Moran’s kick came really, really close to pass between the posts only for a gust of wind to push the ball out the right.

A scoreless draw but a very challenging & exciting encounter.
