Following is the AGM report on U20 season 09/10

Six of the U20 squad this year played for the Irish U.20 side in the summer and, more importantly, a number played for our senior side in the AIL and Leinster championship and acquitted themselves very well. Captained superbly by Nick Mullen this bunch of young men did us proud and have shown great spirit and a never say die attitude throughout their campaigns in Super Six, All Ireland Cup and McCorry cup. Whereas we did not win any trophies we showed that on our day we could beat anyone and did, accounting for League winners St Mary’s in the last league match of the season and again in the semi final of the All Ireland in Templeville. We also defeated McCorry cup winners Blackrock twice. Part of the problem is the non release of representative players which deprives young players of the opportunity to play within their own age group.

In the Super Six, we finished third to St Mary’s in what was a tight league. Having qualified for the All Ireland we beat UL Bohemian away 12-9 after extra time and followed up with a 9-8 away win over St Mary’s in the semi final. The final against UCC was played in Clonmel RFC (who we thank for their hospitality) and sadly we were on the wrong end of a 16-10 scoreline having led for a long period. All present testified to the bravery and attitude of the Lansdowne team that day.

We returned to play in the McCorry cup and went down to an agonising one point defeat to Trinity 12-13 having been 13-0 down at one stage and been the victims of what many considered an incorrect refereeing call. The manner in which this team fought back epitomised the spirit and tenacity of the team and it is a pity that there was no silverware at the end of the season.

Great credit is due to coaches Charlie Quinn, Declan Fassbender and Alan Twomey, manager David O’Mahony and U21 Chairman John Kearney for their dedication and enthusiasm. Thanks to all for some great games and memories.
