Lansdowne 24  DeLaSallePalmerston  15

Lansdowne U17S finally got to play their first competitive fixture of the season against DLSP on  a crisp Autumn afternoon in Lansdowne Rd.

In an excellent game Lansdowne came through a very tough test of character against a  well drilled and committed side to record a stunning win..

Lansdowne got off to a whirlwind start when they broke through straight from the kick off and captain Thomas Costello dived over under the posts.

Jack Mulcahy converted and within 2 minutes Lansdowne were 7-0 up. A great start.

Alarmingly, that was the only Lansdowne incursion into the DLSP for the entire first half. In fact most of the action was taking place inside the other 22m line where DLSP were pounding the Lansdowne line with a series of attacks.

Lansdowne's defence was outstanding for 25 minutes as each attack was repelled. Lansdowne were repeatedly being pinged by the referee for infringing at the breakdown.  DLSP declined several relatively easy penalty kicks as they tried to drive over the Lansdowne line. Lansdowne were having some difficulty with the referees ruling at the breakdown and just before half time Rob Kelly was harshly yellow carded for a ruck infringement. During this period DLSP finally drove through the Lansdowne defence to score a try which was converted. DLSP continued to exert pressure and scored an excellent try in the left land corner which they failed to convert to lead 12-7.

Lansdowne were living off scraps, especially out of touch where DLSP won virtually all line outs. Our backs then started to make inroads and eventually Harry Brennan pounced over on the right to level the scores again.

The match was very evenly balanced and being keenly fought at every position. Another infringement by Lansdowne in front of their own posts led to an easy 3 pointer for DLSP and gave them a three point lead with 15 mins to go. Lansdowne replied with very determined response with some excellent carries from Thomas Costello & Alex McEvoy. With Lansdowne on the attack, Rob Kelly sniped his was over after a quick penalty tap  close to the line.

Lansdowne now lead by 2 and typically DLSP came storming back. A brilliant turnover in their own 22 led to a scrum for Lansdowne. Rob Kelly's subsequent box kick was chased down and collected by Harry Brennan who then stormed off 50m to score under the posts. This was converted by Jack Mulcahy.

A great match and a great result.

Next up is an AWAY League fixture v Greystones next Sunday .Thanks to all for your great support  today and we hope to see you in Greystones.

Man of the Match:  Thomas Costello.
