A message from Shane Byrne, Ireland Legends Captain

I am writing to you regarding the 2019 Irish v English Rugby Legends. Our last outing in 2017 was in memory of Anthony Foley and was one of the best supported rugby events of the decade. This year the Legends team are playing to support Doddie Weir, former Scotland International, as he continues his battle with Motor Neurone Disease. All proceeds will go to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and other rugby charities.

Led by myself and Len Dineen, the fixture has raised over €1,000,000 for charity since it first kicked off in 2009. The last time it took place in Ireland, almost 15,000 people packed out the RDS as all the rugby greats lined out to celebrate the memory of Axel. This year, former Irish internationals Gordon D’Arcy, Malcolm O’Kelly and Mick Galwey will tog out alongside World Cup winners Jason Leonard, Josh Lewsey and Mike Tindall. Many more big names will be there to celebrate rugby and raise much needed funds for such a worthy cause.

The match will take place on February 1st at the RDS, KO 7pm. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster. We also have packages available for you to bring key clients/friends to the Legends game in the RDS and afterwards to a star studded gala dinner, where you will get to sit and talk with some of our Legends and hear some interesting tales from our carefully selected panel, while the rest of the Legends sit back and enjoy a well-deserved pint with the all of the guests. Former International Scott Hastings will also be in attendance on the night. It promises to be a very entertaining evening and a great way to kick off the rugby weekend.

There are only 40 tables at this event, we expect demand to be high, so we are reaching out to our supporters before we open this up to a wider audience. The game kicks off at 7pm in the RDS followed by the Gala dinner in RDS’s The Concert Hall  at 9pm. The cost of the package for the game and the Gala dinner is €2,500 plus VAT, see details attached. RSVP to finola@rugbyplayersireland.ie by 18th January.

We would also ask if it would be possible to promote this to your wider club members, if you require posters or other assets to help us get the word out that is no problem, we can provide these in the coming days.

This is truly a great cause, Doddie has been such a big part of the rugby family and the ex-Rugby players want to give something back to the people and sport that they love. We would be delighted if you could join in and support us by taking a table at the event.

Kind regards

Shane
